Inauguration of New Academic Session of batch 2024-26
Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), Ranchi inaugurated the new academic session of batch 2024-26 in the Fr Michael Van den Bogaert Auditorium on its campus on 6 July 2024. The inaugural session was attended by Chief Guest, Mr Pawan Kumar Singh, Director, IIM Tiruchirappali along with guests Mr Salil Lal, Executive Officer & CHRO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited and an esteemed alumnus of the institution. Mrs Suparna Prasad Dev, Deputy Director in Ministry of Defence, Government of India, along with all faculty members and students from four programmes of XISS namely Human Resource Management, Rural Management, Financial Management, and Marketing Management participated in the inauguration.
The programme began formally with the lighting of the lamp. Thereafter, the Director welcomed the dignitaries on the dais and presented them with a shawl and a sapling. Assistant Director of the institute led a prayer and briefed the students about the life and teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.
Director, Dr Joseph Marianus Kujur SJ, welcomed the newly admitted students and exhorted them to slog and work hard to become ‘corporate ready’ upon completion of their PGDM programmes. In addition to becoming corporate ready, Dr Kujur urged the students to become ‘men and women’ for others. Thereafter, he introduced the faculty members and non-teaching staff members.
Further in the inaugural session, Dean Academics, Dr Amar E. Tigga, introduced the Chief Guest to the audience. He also exhorted the students to keep smiling whatever the circumstances.
In his address, the chief guest, Dr Pawan Kumar Singh, provided the key mantras of success to the students, drawing from his teaching journeys of close to four decades. Citing from the Vedas, he urged the students to become Karma Yogi. He also insisted the students uncover their syllabus and be fundamentally clear about the subjects. Dr Singh, being an alumnus of the institute narrated the journey of more than five decades of excellence of the XISS.
Dr Anant Kumar, Head of the PGDM-RM programme proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural session concluded with the singing of the national anthem. The inaugural session was conducted by Dr Indrani Ghatak, Assistant Professor, PGDM-HRM programme, and Mr Prashant Kumar Jha, PGDM-FM programme.
In the afternoon session, the parents of the newly admitted students interacted with the Director, Dean (Academics), and Heads of all the four programmes where they cleared all the queries and doubts the parents had. They assured them of providing all necessary help and facilities to their wards. Dr Rajshree Verma, Assistant Professor, PGDM-RM coordinated the parents-teachers interaction and proposed the vote of thanks.
Maruti Suzuki XISS Awanish Kumar Dev Memorial Scholarship
Each year three first year PGDM-HRM students are presented with Maruti Suzuki XISS Awanish Kumar Dev Memorial Scholarship. The winners are provided with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh each.
The Maruti Suzuki XISS Awanish Kumar Dev Memorial Scholarship, is constituted in the memory of Late Mr Awanish Dev, GM Plant HR, Maruti-Suzuki India Ltd. who was an alumnus of XISS PM&IR batch 1982-84. He lost his life during a workers’ unrest at the auto major’s Manesar plant on July 18, 2012.
XISS with Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has jointly set up the Maruti Suzuki XISS Awanish Kumar Dev Memorial Trust where the purpose of the scholarship is to encourage competitiveness and learning amongst the HR specialization students at XISS, Ranchi.
In the inaugural session, Ms. Ladli Kumari, senior HR Manager, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, read out the criteria on which the students are awarded with the scholarship and Ms Suparna Dev, wife of Late Awanish Kumar Dev and Mr Salil Lal declared the names of the students. Mr Anirban Nandi, Ms Khushi Poddar and Ms Khyati Raj of HRM Programme of batch 2023-25 were each awarded with Rupees One Lakh only as the winners of the memorial scholarship this year which is being awarded since 2013.
Day 2
The session began with the Director’s interaction with the students in the auditorium where the Director welcomed the students as a part of XISS fraternity and XISS family. He urged the students to always remember their roots and diversity and multiculturality of India. He encouraged the students to inculcate the habit of positive attitude, responsibility, believe in God and to be a Yogi not a Rogi or a Bhogi. He stressed the need to keep pace with the fast-changing business world. He exhorted the students that if they slog, the sky is the limit.
In the second session, Dr Pradeep Kerketta SJ, Assistant Director interacted with the students and briefed the students on ‘Jesuit’s Way of Doing’ and the Jesuit’s way of imparting education. In the third session, Fr Claber Minz SJ, Finance Officer of the institute briefed the students on financial issues in any business organisation and in XISS. He assiduously explained to the students how to deal with any financial matters in XISS.
In the fourth session on Day 2, members of the Alumni Association of XISS (AAXISS) interacted with the students. The AAXISS members led by Vice Chairman Mr Jasbir Singh Khurana along with Mr Abhishek Victor, GM HR Medanta Hospitals and other AAXISS Members provided valuables guidance and tips to the newly admitted students including preparing for placements. The session was coordinated by the Alumni Office including Dr Sharda Singh, Assistant Professor, HRM Programme and Ms Aayurshi, Brand Officer.
There are various committees that deal with the students’ grievances, complaints, and students’ welfare. That includes Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC), Counselling Services (CS), Students’ Grievance Redressal Committee (SGRC). Dr Madhumita Singha, Presiding Officer, ICC, briefed the objective and purpose of ICC and introduced the members of the ICC to the students. Dr Raj Shree Verma briefed the students about the Anti-Ragging Committee and introduced the members of the committee. Dr Anant Kumar urged the students to meet the counsellor when they feel low or feel worried. Dr R.K. Agrawal, Head, SGRC, briefed the students about the purpose of the committee to the students. Dr Madhumita Singha and other members of the team SWAYAM, urged the students to enroll themselves in SWAYAM courses.
In the forenoon session on Day 2, the Controller of Examinations at XISS, Dr Pradeep Kerketta SJ, briefed the students on the conduct of examinations, scholarship policy and code of conduct for students at XISS.
Day 3
A sound knowledge of Indian constitution and the political system is imperative for the students of business management because for the growth and development of businesses takes place in a conducive political environment. On Day 3, in the first session of Induction cum Orientation Programme, Dr Saumya Maniny Sinha, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Political Science, St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi, oriented the students on ‘India’s constitution and political systems’ in the XISS Auditorium.
In the second session, Ms ShamidaLakra, Library-in-Charge, Fr Michael Albert Windey SJ Memorial Library, briefed the students on the fully automated library and the various resources available in the library. She also demonstrated to the students on how to get access of the various textbooks and journals available in the library. She also briefed the students about the National Digital Library of India (NDLI).
In the third session, Dr Indrani Ghatak, Warden of the Hostels, briefed the students on the rules and regulations of the hostels, and various amenities available in the hostels. Thereafter, Mr Akash Bhuinya, Assistant Project Officer, demonstrated the students of using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for keeping abreast with their day-to-day academic activities.
Day 4
It is believed that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, and doing yoga asanas is one of the best ways for leading a healthy and stress-free lives. Mr Rahul Poddar, National Yoga Player and Coach (Joint Secretary of Sports Yoga Association of Jharkhand), National Referee of Yoga Federation of India, taught necessary asanas to the students to lead a healthy and stress-free life.
Day 5
Swami Antarananda Maharaj, Assistant Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Ranchi, sensitised the students on universal human values. Swami Ji demonstrated the ways through which students can understand themselves, their role as a human being in nature, and how to develop an equitable and just society which ensures well-being for all. Dr Shyamal Gomes, Dr K.K. Bhagat, Dr Arana Kausar, and Dr Tina Murarka put forth their ideas of life and its management.
Day 6
Dr Nitish Priyadarshi, a Geology expert from Ranchi University, delivered a lecture on Environment and Sustainability to the students. Dr Priyadarshi gave a glimpse of the history of the earth and universe formation, and highlighted how following nature’s law is necessary to save nature from further degradation. He encouraged students to visit forests and spend time with nature. He highlighted that the most valuable resource for human existence comes from nature for free, however there is a need to value these resources. He encouraged the students to consider nature and the implications on nature in all their future decisions.
Day 7
Concluding the sessions on the final day of the Induction, Dr Pradeep Kerketta SJ, Assistant Director, XISS took a session on the sports culture of the institute. He stated that XISS recognizes the transformative power of sports in shaping individuals. He discussed that the Games and Sports Week organised by the Institute enables the students to take leadership and work together as a team to execute the event.
Furthermore, the Student’s Club Office was introduced in a session by Ms Shruti Sahay, Students’ Club Coordinator. She discussed the importance and distinctive identities of institutional and programme clubs. She emphasised on how these clubs contribute to the vibrant campus culture, enrich the students, and help them explore their diverse interests eventually developing their leadership skills, expansion of their networks, and create memories throughout their journey.
All the institutional clubs were brimming with excitement and went ahead and introduced all clubs to the new incumbents. Obscura - The Media Club, Embark - The Management Club, Aawaz - The Dramatics Club, Creategic - The Creative Club, Pulse - The Dance Club, RCSR - The Rotaract Club of Social Revolution, and MAXIS – Music Association of XISS were introduced amidst loud cheer, dance performance, song performance, and a short nukkad act as the day concluded.
