Background

Dr Uma C. Saha holds an extensive academic background with two Master's degrees: one in Anthropology from Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, and another in Population Studies from the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, where she was the Gold Medallist of her batch. Dr Saha has qualified for the University Grants Commission (UGC)-Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and National Eligibility Test (NET). She earned her Ph.D. in Population Studies from IIPS and a Post Graduate Diploma in Bio-Ethics (PGDBE) from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-IGNOU joint venture, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. Dr Saha teaches courses in Project Management and Statistics for Social and Business Research.

Professional Experience

Dr Saha with over two decades of teaching experience at the post-graduate level and 27 years in researchhas successfully completed more than 26 research projects funded by prestigious organizations such as NTPC, PowerGrid, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), CDC Atlanta, UNICEF, Coal India Limited (CIL), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), and the UK’s DFID-WaterAid, among others. Her research work has resulted in 10 international publications, 25 national publications, 3 authored books, and 9 book chapters. She has presented papers at 9 international conferences in locations such as the USA, Egypt, Czech Republic, South Africa, Thailand, and Indonesia, along with more than 20 national conferences and workshops. Dr Saha has served as a reviewer for several renowned international journals, including Acta Tropica (Elsevier Science), Journal of Biosocial Sciences (University of Cambridge, UK), and Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention. Additionally, she has worked as a research consultant with UNICEF in Bhopal and the State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (SIRD, Jabalpur) on 6 key projects. She was also empanelled as a Facilitator-cum-Evaluator by the Council for Advancement of People’s Action and Rural Technology (CAPART), Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. Dr Saha has adjudicated PhD theses as an external examiner for the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, and served as a visiting faculty member for institutions like Hitkarini Dental College, GS College (Jabalpur), Hari Singh Gaur University (Sagar), and Chaudhary Charan Singh University (Meerut).Moreover, Dr Saha contributed to the development of the MRR-05, Unit 63 course for the Post-Graduate Diploma Programme on Participatory Management of Displacement, Resettlement, and Rehabilitation at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). She was also affiliated with the National Institute for Research in Tribal Health (NIRTH-ICMR), Jabalpur, as a member of its Institutional Ethical Committee (IEC), approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). Dr Saha is a life member of the Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP) and the International Organization for Collaborative Outcome Management in South Asia (IOCOMSA).

Achievements

Dr Saha has received the Chandrashekharan Gold Medal in Population Studies and the Young Scientist Award from ICMR, Jabalpur. She was awarded the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Population Studies by UGC for her Ph.D. research. Dr Saha also received the 1st Prize in Bio-Science during her BSc studies from Raja Narendralal Khan Women’s College, West Bengal.In addition, she was selected for the Scholar Exchange Programme under the ICSSR-Bilateral Collaboration Programme at UNESCO-IHE in Delft, The Netherlands. She has been honored with bursary awards from prestigious bodies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Global Development Network (GDN), European Evaluation Society (EES), International Statistical Institute (ISI), and the Asia Pacific Conference on Tobacco or Health (APACT) for presenting research papers at international conferences.
